“First is a performance like a primal scream.”
Etcetera
With First, Geert Belpaeme composes a prelude with movement. For his first dance solo, he draws inspiration from the children’s programme Tik Tak, geometry and the essay ‘The first man was an artist’ by expressionist Barnett Newman. This mix delivers the leitmotiv that sets everything in motion: the longing to be a line.
First starts out from the idea that us humans, through language itself, are the creators of the reality in which we live. First is a pamphlet, an ode to beginning, danced by the first human for the last human: ‘I still feel we are in a prelude of history. Or again at the prelude. What matters is the beginning. What matters is to constantly begin.’
